Heat Tolerant Salad Greens - 2026

This year, my spring garden was badly damaged by 6 weeks of relentless rainstorms and no sun. The storms started just after Presidents Day and ended by Easter. Normally I would have had the first crop of my hydroponic lettuce in early April. This harvest would be my second crop growing as the sun is growing more intense and the spring temps are rising.

Hydroponic Tango & Baby Oakleaf

The first week of April I planted several varieties, but my best results were Baby Oakleaf and Tango. I have the containers on a caddie and I move it out of the sun and into the shade between 11 am and 4 pm. This time of the year we have sun between 6 am and 7 pm.

Tango has really frilly leaves that look beautiful in a salad. At the end of May, Tango appeared to be at the end of its tolerance, but Baby Oakleaf was still thriving.
